Hoi An is more of a tourist town that is about 45 minutes from Danang. It reminds me of a Laguna Beach with a huge flee market and Mexican street vendors. It is a very walkable town although there are still scooters and bicycles all over the place. Not to mention the tourist buses. The claim to fame is the Lantern market and festival in addition this was really the first city we saw any artwork. The town is beautiful when dusk falls and all the lanterns are lit.
Of course we have lanterns to go home with us. A number of firsts in Hoi An. Dan signed up for a massage and he was going to go by scooter to a nearby island, but the scooter owner was not around when he wanted to schedule his trip. The trip is to a nearby island that can only be reached by bicycle or scooter. The reason we were going to Kim Bong was to see the local woodcarvers. Yes he felt like he needed additional chisels. Yes he did strike up a conversation with a Vietnamese woodcarver that spoke very little English. Through Google Translator and the shopkeeper from the next stall they struck a deal. Now there are 10 chisels and pounding stick in addition to the 4 lanterns that will need to be shipped, but they have to be packed tonight since tomorrow's a fly day.
It is hard to believe we have been gone almost 3 weeks.
